Onchan Wetlands - Planned closure for improved access

Onchan Wetlands - Planned closure for improved access

Planned closure to Onchan Wetlands for access improvements from Friday 15th October 2021 for approximately 1 to 2 weeks.

The path through Onchan Wetlands, which connects Lakeside Gardens to the Village green, will be closed for improvement works from

Friday 15th October 2021 for approximately 1 to 2 weeks.

The Department of Infrastructure is working in conjunction with Manx Wildlife Trust  to improve the path that provides access to Curragh Kiondroghad Nature Reserve in Onchan.

The path is approximately 60 metres long and is currently an unsurfaced rough track that can be very wet and muddy in the winter months.  As well as providing access to the nature reserve from Buttermere Drive, it also links with Onchan Commissioners’ footpath through Onchan Village Green, which in turn opens onto Church Road in the centre of the village.

Once work on the path is complete, it will provide a direct, good quality all weather pedestrian route between the Lakeside area of Onchan and the centre of the village that is off the main roads.

Work to reconstruct the path will begin on Friday of this week (15 October) and will take approximately a week  or so to complete . Whilst work is underway the path will be closed to the public.

The footpath will be  finished with a 1.5 metre wide all-weather asphalt surface which will  improve access to the village for local residents walking from nearby estates, and make the approach  to the nature reserve  much easier for  all members of the public. This forms part of the Department’s work to improve walking facilities and encourage active travel

Thank you for your understanding whilst this work is carried out.
