High Schools

We are supported by DESC and DEFA to provide at least one funded session a year for each school. For the 2024/25 academic year we are offering set sessions for Year 7 - Year 13 classes. Please let us know if you have a different topic we could assist you with by completing the enquiry form at the bottom of the page.

Year 7-11 Kick Sampling Practical

Overview: A kick sampling practical to measure for the abundance of invertebrate indicator species in a stream.

Curriculum Link: Edexcel GCSE Science Biology Core Practical 6 (Sampling).

Location: Please let us know on the enquiry form if you have a location in mind. If not we can advise a suitable stream/river near you.

We will provide: A student workbook containing an explanation of indicator species, a methodology, a table to record data, a graph to fill in, and analysis questions. All the necessary equipment including nets and identification guides.

Year 7-11 Biodiversity School Session

Overview: A school-based session about the biodiversity of our island followed by a trip into your school grounds to complete the ‘How WILD is your land?’ survey and highlight ways to become more wildlife friendly.

We will provide: An interactive presentation about the biodiversity of our island (including significant habitats and species). Digital or paper access to the ‘How WILD is your land’ survey and Nature Recovery Network map.

A’ Level Belt Transect Practical

Overview: A belt transect practical to measure the species distribution and abundance of seaweed across tidal zonation.

Edexcel Curriculum Link: 'Know the ecological techniques used to assess abundance and distribution of organisms in a natural habitat'.

OCR A Curriculum Link: Understand 'how sampling is used in measuring the biodiversity of a habitat'.

Location: Please let us know on the enquiry form if you have a location in mind. If not we can advise a suitable intertidal location near you.

We will provide: A student workbook to draw and annotate key species of seaweed, define key terms, record data, plot findings on kite diagrams and answer key analysis questions. All the necessary equipment including tape measure, quadrats, and identification guides.

A’ Level Kick Sampling Practical

Overview: A kick sampling practical to measure for the abundance of invertebrate indicator species in a stream to determine the relationship between species abundance and water quality.

If not, we can advise a suitable stream/river location near you.

We will provide: A student workbook to draw and annotate key indicator species, define key terms, record data, plot findings on a graph and answer analysis questions. All the necessary equipment including tape measure, quadrats, and identification guides.
