Minibeast Detectives

Your class will become minibeast detectives as they go on a bug hunt and learn to classify invertebrates by different characteristics.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the session, students should be able to:

  • Identify common invertebrates found in the Isle of Man.
  • Recall key characteristics of common invertebrates.
  • Understand what is meant by species classification.
  • Recognise the importance of the tiniest creatures as a part of our whole ecosystem.

Session Outline:

  • Minibeast Identification: Discuss the different characteristics of common invertebrates (minibeasts) we find in the Isle of Man.
  • Species Classification: Learn the basics of species classification or in other words how we group different species into categories based on their common traits.
  • Minibeast Hunt: Become Nature Detectives as we look for different invertebrates, identify them, and classify them into groups.

Possible locations:

  • Offsite: Glens, Woodlands and MWT Nature Reserves.
  • Onsite: This session can easily be delivered in school grounds. If you have a designated wildlife or wooded area, then that’s even better!
