Manx Name: Snoggeyder Mooar
Food: They use their strong beaks and barbed tongues to feed on insects however they also eat seeds and nuts.
Habitat: Great Spotted Woodpeckers tend to live in broadleaf woodland habitats but they can also be found in coniferous forests or even in towns and cities if there are enough parks and gardens.
Threats: Their biggest threat is habitat loss if trees are cut down to clear areas of flat land for farming or building development. Planting trees is brilliant, but we need to look after our precious old trees too.
Your Wildlife Expert Challenge: Find a special tree and tell it your biggest wish for wildlife. Do you know what tree it is? Could you get to know it better by learning what species it is, or doing a bark or leaf rubbing?
Top tip: Why not visit one of Manx Wildlife Trust’s woodland nature reserves. Take your pick here. MWT Ramsey Hairpin Woodland Park is a great day out. You could take a picnic, but remember to take your rubbish home to keep the wildlife that lives there safe.
