Blue Tit Challenge

Blue Tit in Frame

Graham Makepeace-Warne

Manx Name: Kione Gorrym

Food: Blue Tits eat a variety of insects and spiders however they also love to eat caterpillars and feed them to their young in the winter. If they are struggling to find any insects in the winter months, they will look for nuts, seeds and berries.

Habitat: Their favourite habitat is broadleaved woodland as it is home to more insects than any other habitat! They like to nest in holes in trees but also enjoy a garden nestbox.

Threats: Winter is tricky for Blue Tits as it is hard to find food and they often have to rely on bird feeders in people’s gardens. You can help by having lots of insect friendly plants and not being too tidy in the garden in winter, to provide homes for insects that feed the birds.

Your Wildlife Expert Challenge: Go outside and listen to the birds. How many different birds can you hear?

Top tip: You could ask your grown up to download an app that can help you identify the bird songs you here. This is one we like: https://merlin.allaboutbirds.org/
